Mr. E has a bake sale coming up for the National Elementary Honor Society during a basketball tournament.  I was trying to come up with something fun and something Valentine-y to make.  I had this idea to make rice crispy treats into the shapes of Hershey Kisses and wrap them in foil complete with little banners.

They’re raising money for Turner’s Syndrome.  It’s an unfortunate genetic disease that affects girls in which the X or Y chromosome is missing, usually from the father’s side, so girls with this disease are X0. It’s a very unfortunate disease in which usually the ovaries don’t develop, and they can’t have children. A few years ago I read a book about a family with a daughter with this disease from one of my favorite authors. It’s called The Condition, and it’s a really great book.

I got so excited and made these treats up and then took all these pictures and thought it was so cool, until I went to Pinterest. Lol! Then, I realized my idea wasn’t quite so original. What I didn’t see, however, was anybody explaining how to wrap these darn rice crispy treats so they looked halfway decent.  So, that’s what I’m gonna show you today! Because darn it, it took me a few tries to get these looking presentable for a bake sale.

It’s fairly easy to make the treats into kiss shapes.  One thing I do suggest is waiting for about 4-5 minutes so that the marshmallows become more of a tacky texture to work with.  Otherwise, it’s just complete goo and will melt into a puddle.

Make sure you don’t add extra marshmallows to this recipe. I usually make my rice crispy treats with an entire extra bag of marshmallows, but it will not work for this.  You need the treats to be pliable and hold their shape, which works great for the typical recipe for making rice crispy treats.

I made up cute little printables to add as kiss banners.  Click the picture to download the PDF.  They’ll print in landscape mode. Then, just cut them into strips and insert them into the foil.

The secret to making these easy is use a lightweight foil.  I made the mistake of using heavyweight, and it would just not work.  When I switched to the cheap light foil, it worked perfectly.

  1. Pull off square sheets.
  2. Then, lay the kiss in the middle, and pull up the sides all the way around.
  3. Gather it just above the top of the kiss and fold it in a twisting way in one direction. You’re twisting it around the kiss treat.
  4. While twisting it around the kiss, insert the strip banner near the middle top and position it so that it points diagonally upwards.
  5. When you’re reading to trim the top, do so in a rounded manner like the tutorial below.  This will make it easy to twist the top into a perfect kiss shape.
