What are Fairy Cakes?
There are a few different versions all over the world. Here in the U.S., they are often cupcakes with the tops cut off and used as wings to look like butterflies.
In the U.K., they are often mini cupcakes made with a lighter sponge-type cake as well as a glaze instead of our typical buttercream frosting.
Then, there’s my favorite! Have you ever eaten Fairy Cake Lamingtons? They are a lovely treat found in Australia made of sponge cake, whipped cream, and lots and lots of sprinkles!
I discovered them by accident and realized Twinkies could be an easy substitute for sponge cake with whipped cream filling for a quicker no-bake version.

What do you need to make Fairy Cake Twinkies?
While these are no bake fairy cakes, you’ll need a few things.
- a box of golden Twinkies
- powdered sugar
- butter
- hot boiling water
- non-pareil sprinkles
- parchment paper
- cooling rack
How do you make Fairy Cake Twinkies?
First, you’ll need a cookie sheet with a piece of parchment paper. Then, you’ll want to open each Twinkie and put it on the parchment paper.
Freeze the Twinkies for at least 15 minutes. I would recommend not leaving them more than 30 minutes.
Get a second cookie sheet and put a cooling rack over it.
When it’s almost time to take the Twinkies out of the freezer, make the glaze.
Boil the water in the microwave for a couple minutes. Then, add it to the bowl with the butter already sliced up and the powdered sugar.
Whisk the glaze until the butter is completely melted and the glaze is nice and smooth.
Prepare a bowl deep to add about a cup of sprinkles that will fit a Twinkie that can be flipped around to completely cover it in sprinkles.
Take two forks and hold the Twinkie and dip it into the glaze and roll it over to completely cover it.
Gently lift up the Twinkie with the forks and let the excess glaze run off.
Then, immediately dip it into the sprinkles and roll it over to completely cover it in sprinkles.
Set it on the cooling rack to allow excess to drip off.
Continue dipping in the glaze and then sprinkles, until all the Twinkies are covered in sprinkles.
Allow them to dry on the cooling rack for 30 minutes to an hour.
Store in a sealed container.

Can you make Fairy Cake Twinkies ahead of time?
Yes! The glaze and sprinkles harden nicely around the Twinkies, so you can make them up a day or two ahead of time. Just store them in a sealed container.
Can you use other kinds of Twinkies?
You can certainly use any kind of small sponge cake that already has a cream filling much like Twinkies.
I would recommend sticking with the golden Twinkies. The chocolate ones may show through the sprinkles more prominently. In these photos, I actually didn’t use traditional Twinkies as I had found Cotton Candy flavored Twinkies that had pink cotton candy filling.
I would not recommend using the sponge cakes like Zingers that have an icing on top. The icing will melt when dipping the cakes in the hot glaze.
Can you use other sprinkles to make Fairy Cake Twinkies?
I think the rainbow non-pareil sprinkles look most like the typical fairy cakes I’ve seen, but you can totally use other colored sprinkles. I have not tried the longer “jimmies” style sprinkles, so I don’t know how well those would look.
Can you use sanding sugar instead of sprinkles on Fairy Cake Twinkies?
This would probably not work as the sanding sugar would melt into the glaze.
