Rainbow food is positively one of THE most fun foods a kid can eat (or make)! These Rainbow Frosting Twinkies are no exception. They are easy to make, and everyone is going to think they are adorable!
Having a Unicorn or Rainbow Butterfly Unicorn Kitty party? These would be the perfect substitution instead of cupcakes or cake, especially if you’re doing the DIY birthday like I do.

Rainbow Cloud Twinkies
I’ve made candy dipped Twinkies before, and they are really not daunting at all. Here’s what you need:
Supplies:
- 3 cups white candy melts
- 1 can frosting
- Miniature marshmallows
- Pink, orange, yellow, green and blue gel food coloring
- Food safe paint brushes
- Decorating bag
- Large star decorating tip
- Parchment paper
Freeze those Twinkies
Before melting the candy melts, here is my super secret tip for making these easily — Freeze the Twinkies! If you can freeze them for an hour, I find that’s best, but freezing for just 15 minutes works well.
When I only have time to freeze the Twinkies for just 15 minutes or so, I just pull about three of them out at a time to dip in the candy melt and keep the rest in the freezer until I’m ready to dip them. The colder they stay, the nicer they look dipped in the candy melt.
Melt the Candy Melts
Heat 3 cups of candy melts in a microwave safe bowl for 2-3 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds until melted. Microwaves vary so much, just keep checking and stirring every 30 seconds until yours are completely melted. I find 2 1/2 minutes is the sweet spot for my microwave.
Using a slotted spoon or fork (fork works best!) gently lower the Twinkie into the candy melt. Using a separate spoon to coat the top and sides of the Twinkies with the candy melts. Then lift the fork up carefully with the Twinkie and gently shake off the excess and set it immediately down on the parchment paper. I dip 3-4 Twinkies at a time and then get more out of the freezer.
Once all your Twinkies are covered, set your cookie sheet in the freezer for 5-10 minutes to harden the candy melts.
Paint the Frosting Bag
When the Twinkies are ready, it’s time to prepare the frosting. First, place a large star decorating tip in a frosting piping bag and set it in a tall glass and fold the edges over the glass. This way after you’ve filled it with frosting you can fold back the edges to twist closed, and the frosting won’t squish out.
Use a food safe paint brush to paint a stripe of each food coloring gel vertically in the decorating bag. Paint a stripe of pink, then orange, then yellow, then green, and lastly blue so we are in rainbow order.
Fill the bag with frosting and twist the top closed, but keep a small amount of white frosting reserved to add clouds later.
Make a Rainbow
Frost the top of each Twinkie from one end to the other is a wavy back and forth design like pictured below.
Add some Fluffy Clouds
We can’t have rainbows without fluffy clouds. Dab a bit of white frosting on the end of each Twinkie and stick mini marshmallows on the white frosting. Add a bit of frosting here and there to some of the marshmallows and add a few more mini marshmallows to give some dimension.
