What do you need to make Mystery Tie Dye Scrunchies?
- 100% cotton scrunchies
- rubber bands
- a gallon-size ziplock bag
- Tulip Mystery Dye Poppers
- disposable gloves
First and most importantly, you will need 100% cotton scrunchies. If you use a cotton polyester blend or 100% polyester, they will not take the dye well. Cotton polyester will not be vibrant and end up a pastel color. Polyester might not take the dye at all.
You will also need 1 rubber band for 3-4 scrunchies. Make sure they aren’t brightly colored rubber bands, so they don’t inadvertently dye the scrunchies with their color. We dyed 10 scrunchies, so we used three rubber bands.
You’ll also need a gallon size ziplock bag as well as the Tulip Mystery Dye Poppers.
How do you dye the Mystery Tie Dye Scrunchies?
First, get all the scrunchies wet. I add some water to a plastic shoebox and throw all the scrunchies in. Then, I ring them all out of excess water.
Next, take 3-4 scrunchies and rubber band them together. I wrap the rubber band around 3-4 times and spread out the rubber band, so the dye can penetrate through.
Now lay the ziplock bag flat and place the scrunchies into the it. I place each rubber banded set of scrunchies fairly close together, so lots of dye can reach them all.
Strategically place the dye poppers in and around the scrunchies. I put 2-3 dye poppers nestled in each rubber banded set of scrunchies.
Now seal up the ziplock bag and leave just a tiny opening, so the bag doesn’t explode for the next part.
This is the fun part! Take the little wooden hammer that came with the poppers and smash those poppers up! Smash, smash, smash! You want them good and smashed so all the dye pops out.
You can watch the video to see the entire process from start to finish.
Let the bag sit for at least 4 hours. I like to let it sit overnight to get the dye good and set.
After it’s sat for hours, put on some disposable gloves so you don’t dye your fingers. (I have dyed my fingers more times than I can count, and it lasts a long time. So, gloves are best.)
Start the washing machine on a cold cycle on the smallest setting with a small amount of laundry soap. Take the scrunchies out over the washer and remove the rubber bands. Drop all the scrunchies into the washer and run the complete cycle. Then, pop them in the dryer with a towel.
Now your scrunchies are ready for wearing!
