How do you make a Grimmerie?
This is where everyone’s imagination and creativity can fly high!
If you’re going to paint the ribbon, make sure to hot glue it to the journal before painting.

Then, paint the cover of the journal.

Have hair dryers handy at the party to dry the paint quickly.

Next, it’s time to have fun embellishing your Grimmerie. And this is for you, so there is no wrong way to do it. For one journal I chose to decorate with lots of washi tape and some tarot cards.

Two things I made sure I had enough for every journal was the keyholes and keys. So when you’re nearly done, make sure to hot glue the keyhole to the front of the journal. And then you can decide how to attach the little key.

I chose to make marker ribbons or use the marker ribbons that were still attached to the journal and tie the key at the bottom of each one. You can also hot glue a ribbon around the cover and tie a key on, or whatever you choose. You could just hot glue the key next to the keyhole on the book.

Feel free to decorate the inside as well adding scrapbook paper and embellishments or just leave it as a journal. I did this to one of the journals I made.

One journal I painted black and added a death tarot card to the back of it. I wanted to make it a little dark and mysterious, maybe a little scary. I added touches of gold paint through the ribbon and around the book. I did the same with the green grimmerie, adding touches of gold paint to the poppy flowers here and there.

For the second journal, I wanted something that was an ode to The Wizard of Oz movie, and… after writing two romance books that involve poppies, I kind of have a thing for them.
So, I painted the grimmerie green, and I found these red paper flowers that reminded me of poppies and covered the front of the journal with them. I love how they came out.

Next I added a ribbon on top of them and finished them off with gold washi tape. Then I hot glued the keyhole. On the back of this grimmerie, I added this lion tarot card that made me think of the cowardly lion and the lion cub that Elphaba saved.

Lastly, I added some bookmarker ribbon since this one did not come with one. I attached another key to these ribbons that reminded me of OZ with the big O on the key.
Now it’s time fill your grimmerie. If you’re a witch add your spells and favorite ingredients. If you’re a writer, journal and make stories. If you’re a baker or cook, add your cherished recipes.
I am a bit of all of that, so I use my journal as a catch all for brainstorming book ideas, recipes, and things I need to write down. I keep it with me in my tote bag at all times. You have no idea how many times I’ve whipped it out and written a romance scene that I later transferred to a book. Just seeing it in my bag gives me a bit of inspiration.
Now go forth and make your own Grimmerie. See you at the Wicked party!
