It got a little warmer a few days ago than it has been, so I decided it was time to try grilling some steaks. We had a a little bit of a disaster trying to grill in freezing temps recently. But, this time instead of trying to cook something big, I bought round steaks, cut them in half, smashed them, and put them on skewers. While they cooked, Nate basted some in Kraft Hickory Smoke and some in Sweet Honey barbecue sauces. They cooked in just a few short minutes and came out to perfection.
Your kids will love this! My kids love eating anything on a stick. I wished I had gotten a picture of at least one of them with barbecue sauce on their cheeks. We served our Smashed Cowboy Kebabs with fresh corn and baked potatoes. I was able to found corn on the cob still in the husks at the store, and we grilled those, too! There is nothing like some olive oil butter dripping down your chin while eating fresh corn.
I love a good juicy steak fresh off the grill. There is just nothing like it. But, in the winter it can be so hard with inclement weather to keep the grill at a good, hot temp. A few weeks ago we tried to cook two big ol’ skirt steaks out on the grill. I was going to chop them up into fajita meat. It was freezing outside and super windy. Eventually we gave up, and I had to cook them the rest of the way in the oven.

- 1 1/2 to 2 lbs round steaks
- olive oil
- your chocie of Kraft Barbecue Sauce
- bamboo skewers
- Presoak your bamboo skewers for at least 20-30 minutes. (so they don't burn up)
- Cut each small round steak in half.
- Thread each steak half onto a skewer.
- Use a meat tenderizing hammer to smack both sides of the meat.
- Brush each skewered meat with olive oil on both sides.
- Then, brush each side with Kraft Barbecue Sauce.
- Rub grill grates with olive oil and then get the grill really hot.
- Place the skewers on direct flames and baste with more Kraft barbecue sauce.
- Flip after 2 minutes and baste the other side with Kraft barbecue sauce.
- Remove from grill and let sit for 4-5 minutes before serving.
- Get the grill good and hot, close to 400 degrees or so.
These kebabs are super simple to make. Just don’t forget to soak your skewers! You want the grill so hot you can only stand your hand over it for 1 second, and that kind of temperature will burn up your skewers to nothing. The soaking will prevent mostly prevent that. We had one skewer that broke off, but all the rest were fine.
I was a little nervous cooking steaks after the fajitas, but I was so pleased with how they came out. We recently got a smoker than can be used a grill or a smoker, and it gets amazingly hot, much better than our larger grill during these cold months. We got it going, and Nate was able to use the Evergriller Grill ‘N’ Flip Mitt that Kraft sent us with a basting brush so he didn’t have to worry about burning himself and it kept him warm, too.
