My absolute favorite holiday is Halloween. We live on a corner lot, and I just love to decorate. During the months of September and October, I DIY outdoor decorations for Halloween for my home.
One easy way to create DIY Halloween decorations is wreaths. It’s so inexpensive to make one and quick and easy. This tutorial is for a creepy crow and bones wreath with a few spiders thrown in.
I just love how it came out! The dyed cheesecloth with the old bones and crows just came out totally creepy and exactly what I had in mind! Perfect to decorate your front door for Halloween.

Creepy Crows & Bones Wreath
Supplies
6 yds cheese cloth – 2 pkgs
black Rit dye – one pkg
1 cup salt
straw wreath – $2.99/Joann’s
3 crows – $1/ea at Dollar Tree
extra creepy decorations like spiders/bones, etc.
hot glue gun
Directions
1. Open cheesecloth and unravel it. From 1 pkg, save 1 1/2 to 2 yds and keep white.
2. Top loader washing machines — Set washer on hottest water, longest setting, and smallest load.
(I know nothing about front loaders, so please check out these recommendations from Rit Dye)
3. Start washer, add dye, add salt, throw in cheesecloth.
4. At end of cycle, you will have a dark gray/black cheesecloth – Perfect! It might be tangled. I spent a few minutes untwisting mine before I threw it in the dryer.
5. Throw it in the dryer for 20 minutes.
6. I am allergic to straw, so I kept my straw wreath in the plastic. I’d recommend doing the same as it will get everywhere. Tie off cheesecloth on straw wreath and begin wrapping it all the way around. It took me all but about 1 yard. When I finished with one piece and started the second, I left ragged sections hanging about 8-10 inches. It adds to the creepiness factor.
7. I used a broken skeleton from last year and some leftover spiders. Position creepy decorations (bones, spiders) and crows. Hot glue into place.
8. Use the leftover black cheesecloth to add a tie to the top for hanging. The more ragged it looks the better.
9. With the white cheesecloth you kept in the beginning, create a bow. I tied it like a normal bow and then pulled out the loops to make them fuller. I also sprayed them with fabric stiffener.
10. Attach bow.
You’re done! Now hang your creepy wreath!
Happy Halloween!

Nice, love the creepy effect of the crows, like they are picking at the bones. Nice and ghoulish! 🙂 Found you over at Alderberry Hill!

I absolutely love how this turned out!! I never would have thought to check the dollar store for crows for some reason, but I definitely will be looking this year. Thanks for the tips!
