Every year when summer comes around, I feel a bit nostalgic about my summer vacations as a kid. I want my kids to have the same memorable experiences, so I often plan things the way my family did for summer vacation.
My family almost always took a family vacation every year. One year we drove all the way from Texas up through the panhandle through New Mexico and Colorado, and eventually we arrived at the Grand Canyon. All along the way, we camped at various campgrounds. I still remember vividly one campground where they had nightly ice cream socials and showed cartoons on a big screen.
Here are me, my dad, and my little brother after we arrived on the top of Pike’s Peak by train. I brought my Cabbage Patch doll with me. I remember it was so cold, and I picked candy rocks in the gift shop.
Here’s another one of my dad and his brother and sister on a family vacation when they were kids. My grandpa always insisted on a road trip. Often times he just made them sleep in the car at a rest stop!!
Ice cream floats are something that always bring me back to my childhood, too. I love to share one with one of my kids for a carefree moment during the summer evenings. One of my favorite ice cream floats is a blended float. It’s like a milkshake, but it’s made with a soft drink and ice cream instead of milk and ice cream.
I am thrilled when Dr. Pepper Vanilla Float® comes out during the summer. It just makes me think of all things summer — hot summer days, relaxing in the pool, late evenings with the cricket sounds, and my kids with melted ice cream running down their arms from a treat from the ice cream man.
This is a fun, fast frozen treat to make with the summer Limited Editions of Dr Pepper Cherry® & Dr Pepper Vanilla Float®. You can find them at select Safeway or Albertsons stores. All you need is a can of Dr Pepper Vanilla Float® and your favorite ice cream. Mine is always vanilla bean. Mix the two in the blender, and you’ve got a blended float. I like to add a tiny scoop of ice cream to top it off.
