Yesterday was our first day of school this year, so we picked up school supplies a couple weeks ago. I made sure every crayon, marker, and colored pencil was Crayola brand. They are the only ones I trust to actually wash out of my kids’ clothes. But, while we were shopping, I also made sure to pick up extras for the teachers. I always like to send extra supplies because I know those things often come directly out the teachers’ paychecks.
This summer we found out my 8 year old has sensory processing disorder. Last school year, it caused a lot of anxiety and crying in her classroom. Without her teacher, I would have never known we needed to get Molly help. Her teacher was very patient and took the time to teach Molly breathing exercises to help her calm down when she got upset.
Molly loved her teacher last year and wanted to stop by her old classroom and bring her previous teacher a thank you note on the first day of school.
We have now had occupational therapy all summer long, and it has really helped Molly. Her new teacher is very patient and calm and is already aware of the situation. Before school, her teacher even helped me come up with some good accommodations if Molly has issues this year in class.
