I’m not sure what to call this, but I’ve been dreaming it up for my weird gallery wall in the bathroom. This is my Pinned Fairy Skeleton for Halloween or maybe you can call it a Taxidermy Fairy. Either name is a bit ghoulish, which is why I saved this for Halloween.
And yep, the bathroom. That’s where you’ll find my cigarette-smoking cat, and a shark playing pool, and a few other odds and ends. And I thought it was the perfect place to add a Pinned Fairy.

What inspired the Pinned Fairy Skeleton?
You might have noticed I write romance books. I have a free prequel novella for my upcoming series. In that novella, Claire and Sonny are at a witch market and she finds a print she’s been looking for. She tells Sonny she has a gallery wall in her bathroom and describes all the crazy art on it. One of those things is the pinned fairy skeleton. The entire scene was inspired by my own real life because I also have an art gallery wall in the bathroom with eclectic art and have been dying to make my pinned fairy for a while now.
If you like spicy romance, download the free novella! It’s been getting 5 stars on Goodreads!
Supplies
- 9 x 9 inch shadow box
- Bug Pins – Size 5
- Butterfly Wings
- 6-inch plastic skeleton
- Gold craft paint
- paint brush
- Paper & Pen
- Ink pad
- Glue Gun
How to make a Pinned Fairy
Take the back off the shadow box.
Rub a brown or black ink pad gently along the skeleton to add some depth.
Gently break the butterfly wings off the bug.
Add some gold paint around the wings, however you want to do it.
Dry brush a little bit of gold all over the skeleton.
Add hot glue to the raw edge of the butterfly wing, attach it to the back of the skeleton.
Do the same for the second wing.
Add a drop of glue to the head of the skeleton and down the spine.
Flip the skeleton over carefully and press to the center of the shadow box backing.
Add a little glue to the heels of the feet.
Get out four pins.
Take two pins and add one to each butterfly wing.
Add the second two pins, one to between the leg bones of each leg.
Cut small slips of paper.
Write on one piece of paper the common name: “Faerie” or “Fairy”
Then rub the edges of the paper around on the ink pad to age it a little.
On a second small slip of paper you can write it out or print it out, whichever you prefer. I personally think writing it out looks better.
You’ll put the following:
- Scientific Name:
- Date Trapped:
- Location Found:
For my label I made it all up:
- Faerun mystica
- 24 September 2004
- Sylvan Hollow
Add glue to the back of your small pieces of paper.
Put the common name above the head.
Put the scientific information on the fairy’s right side.
Place the backing back into the shadow box and hang it up.
That’s it!
