Our house has a built in desk in the hallway that has always been a bit of wasted space. It was labeled the “tech center” on the house plans, so that’s what we call it.
It has never really been a desk, but more of just a place to pile stuff that doesn’t have a place – laundry baskets, broken electronics, mail, etc. I intensely disliked how unorganized it was. But, that’s all changed now!
We have lived here almost 10 years now and have not done much painting — until now. My oldest daughter was home from college between semesters, so she and I decided to give the hallways a makeover — including that tech center.
I wanted to turn the tech center into a command center with storage. I wanted a place to store office supplies and important things for the kids that also was a place where the kids can put their important papers, do homework, and a place to pile the mail. It took exactly two weekends to get it all done.
First, we repainted all the hallways in the house. I chose a color called Alpaca in a semi gloss for easy cleaning. It’s a light gray color that has more of a brown tone than a bluish tone. I wanted something that would help hide little hand prints, so I wasn’t constantly cleaning them.
My husband did not like the color when I brought it home. However, he loves it now that the walls are all done.
It looks so fresh and clean, and best of all, there’s not dirty hand prints or chipped paint anywhere. It looks amazing!
As a last minute idea, my husband suggested we paint the back wall of the tech center to match an “accent wall” that separates the kitchen from the living room. I can’t quite remember the name as we just used leftover paint, but it’s a dark turquoise color.
I was hesitant to agree to it, but I do love how it came out. It just adds a great layer behind the new cabinets.
Adding Hallway Storage
Part of the hallway makeover was adding storage. I thought a set of cabinets over the tech center desk would be a perfect place to add storage.
Wayfair has a TON of cabinets you can choose from. I searched through all the choices for days before finally making my decision.
I ended up ordering this set of three cabinets in black. Since our tech center counter top is a dark color, I thought black would look the best. They also have these same cabinets in a light gray and white. And, if you’re looking for a whole set of cabinets, this three-cabinet set is actually party of a whole group of cabinets that all fit together (but they also look great just by themselves).
New Cabinets from Wayfair
The cabinets arrived in just two days! They came in a box that weighed over 80 lbs. They also require assembly. I recommend doing these cabinets with a partner.
My husband and my teenage son put them together and had them hung in about three hours. The directions were straightforward, and fairly easy to follow. The only issue we had is getting the cabinet doors to be perfectly aligned. Two of them are just slightly off, but it’s not noticeable at all.
The cabinets look amazing! I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the quality is very nice. They have a semi gloss look to them and don’t look cheap. I love that they come with shelves inside.
Our New Command Center
To complete our command center, I’ve added:
- Letter trays for the kids to put their papers
- A collapsible basket for the mail
- A charging station for everyone’s devices
- Under the cabinet lights
Our hallways are now clean and fresh with the updated paint. We have a whole set of cabinets for additional storage. And, the tech center is now a command center for everyone to use.
If you’re looking to get organized and add more storage to your home, check out Wayfair. They have all kinds of items for storage and organization from cabinets and shelving to bins and boxes.
Stay Tuned! We’re doing a few more room makeovers this year. Next up is the kid bathroom where we are adding more cabinet storage, and it just arrived from Wayfair! Then, I’m planning to tackle the laundry room. I cannot wait to get this same set of cabinets in white from Wayfair for the laundry room.
