What do you need to make the Apple Flower Pot for Teacher Appreciation Gift?
- Terra Cotta Flowerpots and Saucers – I used a 6″ pot and 4″ saucer. You can make them any size you want but be sure the saucer fits on top of the flowerpot like a lid.
- Wooden Peg People or Spool
- Felt Craft Sheets – Olive Green and Dark Green (or craft foam sheets and even heavyweight cardstock)
- Acrylic Craft Paint – Red, Bright Green, Dark Brown
- Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
- Paintbrush – one-half-inch flat wash
- Ribbon Scraps – assorted colors of green
- Pencil with new eraser
- Scissors
How do you make the Apple Flower Pot for Teacher Appreciation Gift
First, you’ll want to remove the labels from flower pots and saucers.
Then add a basecoat to the flower pot and saucer with red acrylic craft paint.
Apply a second coat, if necessary, and then set aside to dry. The paint will soak into the clay of the flowerpot, so you will definitely need more paint than normal.
Next, cut leaf shapes from olive and dark green felt and then accent the leaves with a pattern in bright green acrylic craft paint. If you can’t find felt, heavyweight cardstock or craft foam works well, too.
Polka dots and plaid are easy patterns to duplicate. You can easily make the polka dots using a new pencil eraser dipped in acrylic craft paint and dot onto the leaf. Or, you can use the edge of the paintbrush to create stripes and plaids.
Add a basecoat the wooden peg person or spool with dark brown acrylic craft paint. Apply a second coat, if necessary, and set aside to dry.
You could also use a stick from the yard instead of the wooden finial or spool.
After the leaves are dry, apply a dot of glue from a glue gun to the base of each leaf and pinch to create dimension.
Attach the wooden stem to the top center of the flowerpot saucer with a glue gun and glue sticks. You could use liquid craft glue, but you will have to wait for it to dry.
Tie assorted green ribbons, trims, and baker’s twine to the stem. Trim any long ends with scissors.
Layer the olive green and dark green leaves together, and then attach to the base of the wooden stem using the glue gun.
Get your apple pot ready to give! Fill it with tissue paper or paper shreds. Then, top with candy and a gift card or whatever your kids’ teachers love! I’ve sent Office Depot, JoAnns, Michaels, and even Amazon gift cards — I try to stick with something they can really use or something to treat themselves.
