The House at the End of Hope Street by Menna van Praag
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I finally got this book from the library, and then I let it sit for weeks. It kept staring me down, but I just didn’t want to pick it up…yet. But then, I began to read, and it was one of those lovely magical stories that I couldn’t put down.
It involves the lives of four women at a house on Hope Street in Cambridge, England. The house is magical and only appears to those women who need it. Many of whom, go on to become great women. When you arrive, you are given 99 days to live there, during which time the house helps you become the woman you are supposed to be.
The story is mainly around a young woman named Alba who has just lost everything at college. She’s a magical girl who sees colors in sounds. She can tell someone’s emotions, truths, lies, etc. just from their voices. I kept thinking I would love this gift.
I loved each story line, and thought everything was wrapped up very nicely. My only dislike was that I wished Alba got vindication for how she was wronged.
All in all, this was a great read which for me was reminiscent of Sarah Addison Allen novels that I enjoy so much.

This book sounds interesting – I think I’ll add it to my to-find-at-the-library list.
