What do you need to make Grinch Popcorn?
This is easy! It just takes microwave popcorn, green candy melts, and some heart confetti.
I like to use JOLLY TIME popcorn’s Simply Popped. It takes the color of the green candy melts the best and makes a vibrant “grinchy” color. Plus, it tastes so good, and there’s hardly any kernels left after it’s done popping.
How do you make Grinch Popcorn?
If you have a kid who likes to mix things up like slime, they are going to love making Grinch Popcorn.
First, you’ll need to pop two bags of the popcorn and pour it out on a cookie sheet. If you want to keep your cooking sheet clean of candy melts, you should cover the cookie sheet completely with foil. If you don’t care (like me), it takes some soap and water to clean it up when you’re done.
Then, you’re going to melt the candy melts. I found that about 2 1/4 cups of light green candy melts mixed with 1 cup of bright green gives a nice vibrant color that is somewhat “grinchy.”
I melt them in the microwave. Make sure to use a microwave-safe bowl because if you don’t, the bowl can get too hot and the candy melts just clump together and never melt.
Microwave for 30-second increments and then stir. I found this is the best way, and it prevents the candy melts from getting too hot and clumpy. It usually takes me a total of about 2 1/2 to 3 minutes to get them smooth and melted.
Next, you’ll pour the candy melts over the popcorn and then mix with your hands. I have tried this a number of ways, and while it’s messy, it’s the best way to mix the popcorn and candy melts. My kids LOVE doing this part.
Then, it’s time to wait and let the candy melt harden. You can speed this up in the fridge or freezer, but be careful and only let it cool a few minutes. Because if there is a bunch of candy melt on the bottom under the popcorn, you’ll have more of a popcorn bark that you need to break up.
When it’s ready, transfer it to a bowl and add the big heart sprinkles to the mix. Now you’re ready for family movie night with The Grinch!
