I’ve been a mom for more than 18 years now, and we just started over with baby #4 who is 7 months old. As a mom of 4, I have never understood the long list of expensive nursery items that babies never use. There really isn’t a lot you need when it comes to your baby’s nursery. These are my top FOUR (yes only 4) essentials you need for the baby nursery.

Baby Nursery Essentials
Crib – a good crib and mattress that follow current guidelines to keep your baby safe.
Cotton crib sheets – I stick with 100% cotton for bedding for my babies. My favorite brand is Parent’s Choice at Walmart. They wash up so soft. Not only are they so affordable, but they have nine coordinating colors throughout their Mix and Match collection, so parents can mix and match for a customized look.
Waterproof pads – I put one of these under the crib sheet so just in case we have a leaky or blowout diaper or even a drooling baby, it won’t stain the mattress. I love that I can get these in a 3-pack from Parent’s Choice at Walmart.
Blankets – I never put blankets in my baby’s crib when she’s sleeping or unsupervised. However, I do use baby blankets for so many more things. Parent’s Choice has several different options from flannel receiving blankets to fleece blankets and even knit blankets (my fave!), and they are just so adorable.
I keep at least two baby blankets in the car for use in the stroller, for nursing in public, or when the weather gets unexpectedly chilly or rainy. I also keep them all over the house for laying the baby down for tummy time or play time, or even if she’s a little messy from a runny nose or just finished eating. I also like to keep them near when it’s time to get baby to sleep when I rock her or nurse her to sleep just to keep her nice and cozy in my arms.
Parent’s Choice at Walmart
You can find all of these at affordable prices right at Walmart! This is why I love Parent’s Choice at Walmart as most of their items are less than $13. They have more than 275 products with everything you need from bedding to baby wipes and more. You can get great quality at just a fraction of the price, and often their products are as good if not better than the top brands.
Parent’s Choice Mix and Match Bedding has been my choice for baby bedding since my oldest was a baby, almost 20 years ago! They have super cute trendy patterns. I love how you can really mix and match the bedding because it all just coordinates throughout the collection.
My favorite is always the blankets. Parent’s Choice has these wonderful high quality fleece blankets made with minky fabric that you often find in high end boutique baby stores for just a fraction of the price. Now that it’s cold, we are using the fleece blanket in the stroller more often.
Ivy has just gotten really good at sitting up, so she loves to play peekaboo with me and her blankets.
Parent’s Choice has affordable essentials we all need for those early years. They work better and save you a lot of money you can be using elsewhere. Plus, you can pick them up in the store or order online and have them delivered right to your door for free.

A waterproof mattress pad is everything. Leaks WILL happen and that makes life so much easier – especially in the middle of the night.
The blankets are so adorable and it’s nice to make sure that your baby has something that’s so comfortable and soft! I think it’s a lovely choice for parents!
Parent’s choice has some really nice baby items! We had a bunch of their stuff for our nursery at one point and I loved the price point and the quality!
I have a baby boy and I agree with this list. Especially the blanket.. it’s a must have WHEREVER we go. Parent’s choice is great too!
This is a great list. Often new mom’s are overwhelmed with what to get for baby. These are all great essentials. We also used the sheets and blankets from Walmart. There were so many options. A mattress protector is a great investment.
It’s been a few years (12) since I had a baby, but these are all at the top of a list of must haves. I couldn’t imagine being without any of those.
I totally agree! Most of my go-to gifts in a baby shower are the essentials you pointed out. It thrills me to see if the new mom uses them too!
I have a 2-year-old and a 5-month-old, and I can attest we have baby blankets everywhere in the house and they all get used.
I can’t wait to be at this step in life. Thanks for putting this together
These are definitely great essentials to have when bringing a baby home. They are also very cute. Babies are the best.
Yes these are all essential baby gifts for sure! It’s amazing what the registry lists say you “need” for the baby, when in reality they don’t need much! This is a great crib and such sweet blankets!
When my Kiddies were babes I think I picked up a new blankie every time I went out. It was always something I could use and need. Great list!
Waterproof? Oh how I wish I had these products when my kids were still young! This would have made my life easier, that’s for sure.
Blankets are always a welcome gift. You have some in every room!
super cute baby! I love baby blankets because they are so soft. I guess I need to get myself a pack!
Omg what an absolute cutie! I think blankets are so key for a baby nursery as not only does it help them feel more cozy but helps them have a better nights sleep too.
You can never have enough sheets for a baby’s bed. You never know when they might have an accident that requires a quick change. Baby blankets are also great for using while your baby is in their carrier or jumpers, etc.
I always used blankets to lay down on the floor for baby to lay on top of or even as big burp cloths since my daughter spit up so much. I love the Parents Choice brand.
A waterproof mattress cover is key! There is so much puling and peeing happening baby beds.
These are adorable! I didn’t know that there was a Parents Choice bedding line at Walmart, but I’ll be on the lookout the next time that I go.
That blanket is so sweet and soft! With my second daughter I definitely didn’t need as much simply because we went way overboard with our first daughter six years prior. This list is great!
