Over the past few years I have fallen in love with romantasy books, so here are some of my favorite romantasy books!
Table of Contents
What’s Romantasy?
It’s books in the genre of fiction that is both romance and fantasy. It usually involves magic, and there’s usually Fae, Vampires, Gods, and Goddesses, and more.
At the library or the bookstore, these books are often shelved in the fantasy section or the romance section. It just depends. At Barnes & Noble, I often find them in the fantasy section.
Romantasy can also be written in different times. It can be like Elizabethan Court where everyone dresses in ballgowns or you can find modern ones where people have technology. Or, there’s world-building that isn’t like anything you’ve seen before. I love all of them.
Most romantasy books tend to be in a series of books and not just stand-alone novels.
I should note that most romantasy is very spicy. I haven’t read a lot of “sweet romance” romantasy books.
Romantasy by Jennifer Armentrout
Jennifer Armentrout is one of my absolute favorite authors. She’s written both yound adult and adult novels. I’ve read nearly eveyrthing by her, and many of them are of the romantasy genre. They involve vampires, fae, aliens, wolves, etc.
Her adult romance books are very spicy. Her young adult are more slow burn and tame.
These are three of my favorite series by her and all of these are adult romantasy novels with high heat (spicy).
From Blood & Ash
Currently From Blood & Ash is a 5-book series with two additional books on the way. Book 5 ended on a major cliffhanger.
Book 1 begins with Poppy, who has been Chosen since birth to live the life of a Maiden, destined for Ascension. She’s never to be touched, spoken to, or even looked upon. But, she’d rather be fighting evil with the guards, the evil that murdered her family. But, she’s never been given a choice.
Then, she meets Hawke, a golden-eyed guard who is honor-bound to ensure her Ascension. But, destiny and duty get mixed up with desire and need. He tempts her with the forbidden and makes her question everything. And soon, everything begins to unravel.
Fall of Ruin and Wrath
This is a very new series. It’s the first book in the Awakening series that just came out a few months ago, and I cannot wait to read more into this series.
Long ago, the world was destroyed by gods with just 9 cities left, each separated by the wilderness full of monsters. Calista, a girl who grew up in an orphanage was born with an intuition that never fails. Now she hides as a courtesan to the Baron of Archwood, who protects her in exchange for information she gives him.
One day her intuition leads her to save a prince who’s been kidnapped, but that voice inside her gives both a warning and promise that he will bring her joy, but one day he will be her destruction.
When the prince takes an interest in her, Calista becomes his temporary companion, but with a city on the brink rebellion, with monsters at teh gates, and a hungry prince in her bed, her intuition might not be enough to save her.
A Shadow in the Ember (Flesh & Fire Series)
This is a prequel to From Blood & Ash. It’s about Death’s consort, who has lived a very parallel life to Poppy. It’s currently 3 books, with a 4th book coming in August. It’s currently my favorite. I cannot wait to get my hands on book 4.
Seraphena is born in a shroud and Chosen to live as the Maiden in order to save her kingdom from the rot ravaging the land. Two hundred years before her birth, her ancestor made a deal to make the first-born daughter in his line the consort of the Primal of Death, and that is her.
But, Sera is hidden from the world. No one even know she exists outside of the royal family, who completely ignore her. But, she’s been trained since birth to eventually seduce and become the Primal of Death’s weakness, to kill him in order to stop the Rot. But when the Primal of Death rejects her, she is forced into becoming the royal assassin — a monster.
Until, a chance meeting. She meets him, the Primal of Death, whose unexpectedly chases away her darkness. And his seductive touch ignites a passion she’s never allowed herself to feel. But she’s never had a choice.
Romantasy by Sarah J Maas
A Court of Thorns & Roses
This is the book that made me obsessed with the Romantasy genre. It’s currently a 5-book series, with two more expected books in the series.
We recently hosted A Court of Thorns & Roses party here on the blog with a TON of posts, from recipes to printables to trivia and crafts. Click HERE to find all those ACOTAR party posts!
When Feyre Archeron kills a wolf in the woods, just trying to feed her starving family, her life changes forever. She’s dragged by a terrifying beast to a magical land she only knows about from legends. She discovers her captor is not a beast all the time, but an immortal faerie.
Learning to live in her new home, her feelings for Tamlin, the faerie beast, change from hate to a fiery passion. She realizes she’s been told lies about the dangerous world of the Fae. But, there’s also something not right about Prythian, the faerie lands. Something dangerous is growing, and a prophecy says it’s up to Feyre to stop it, or doom Tamlin and the Fae world forever.
Crescent City
This is a 3-book series set in modern times with technology in a Fae world that involves aliens. This series involves all kinds of magical creatures freom Fae to Witches to Merfolk, and even Angels. I think the series is finished with three books, but I am not officially sure on that.
Bryce Quinlan is a young woman who works hard and parties harder, until a demon murders her best friends, leaving her in ruin and alone. After someone is caught for the crime and lands behind bars, the crimes start up again, and that sends Bryce right into the investigation. She wants to avenge their deaths.
Hunt Athalar is a Fallen angel who’s enslaved to the Archangels he tried to overthrow hundreds of years ago. He is a no questions-asked assasin. But when the demons continue to wreak havoc on the city, he’s offered a deal by his Archangel boss — help Bryce find the murdered and he’ll get his freedom.
But as they dive into Crescent City’s criminal world, they find a dark power threatening everything, and soon, they find a fiery passion between them.
Throne of Glass
This is a 7-book series that will rip you up. I cried so many times reading these books.
The world is without magic, and the king rules with an iron fist. But the crown prince releases Celaena Sardothian, an assassin, from a death camp to come be his champion at the castle for a competition. To win her freedom, she must defeat 23 other killers and warriors.
She soon learns that something evil is dwelling in the castle made of glass, and it’s there to kill. What was a fight for freedom, soon becomes a fight for survival as she tries to figure out what is happening along with the crown prince and the captain of rthe guard before it destroys the world.
More Romantasy Books
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
This is currently a two-book series with a third book on the way in a few months. If you love stories about dragons, this might be the book for you.
Violet Sorrengail was supposed to become a scribe like her father, living a quiet life among books and history. But her mother, the commanding general has ordered her to become a dragon rider. But Violet is smaller than everyone else which means death is always a heartbeat away. Plus, dragons don’t bond with weak humans, they incinerate them.
And it’s not just the dragons she needs to worry about. With fewer dragons to bond with, many cadets are willing to kill to better their own chances, including Xaden Riorson, the most powerful wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.
Every day, the war grows deadlier, and the kingdom’s wards are failing, and even worse, Violet begins to suspect the leadership is hiding something.
A Ruin of Roses by K.F. Breene
This is probably the spicest, high heat romantasy book series I’ve read. If you’re a pearl-clutcher, I don’t know if you’ll like this one, but it’s so fun and funny. It’s a four-book series with a twist on Beauty and the Beast.
The demon king has put a curse on the land, a curse from the deal the mad late mad king struck with him. It’s locked the kingdom in time and made it the forgotten kingdom in the world. Shifters can’t feel their animals anymore. It’s turned the prince, Nyfain, into a beast, his wings sheared off, and he stalks the forbidden wood. He is the last dragon shifter.
But he catches Finley in the forbidden wood, gathering a special plant that helps those who are sick from the curse. But he doesn’t kill her, instead he takes her back to the castle as his prisoner, to use her.
Somehow she can save him and the whole kingdom. But for her it could be her ruin.
Filthy Rich Vampire by Geneva Lee Albin
This is a 4-book series. I’m currently about 75% through book 4, and I love it. It’s got Vampires, Witches, Fae, and even Sirens.
Julian Rousseaux has a problem. His mother has awoken him from a 30-year slumber for the social season, so he can find a wife, whether he likes it or not.

She seems to innocent, too young, too human, too nice. He tries to compel her, but it doesn’t work, and now that she knows abou the vampire world, that could make her a target.
So he makes her an offer she can’t refuse. He asks her to be his fake girlfriend, so he doesn’t have to try to find a wife, and he can protect her, in exchange he’ll get her out of crippling medical debt.
