Time flies when you have a baby. One minute you’re pregnant, and the next minute you have this sweet little newborn baby. Then, before you know it, it’s time for the first birthday party and their first taste of cake. There is such a thrill when you set the smash cake in front of your little one. They have no idea what to do with it, and then, suddenly they figure it out and cake is everywhere!
One of the best parts of your baby’s first birthday party is the cake. It’s a lot of fun to make your baby her very own smash cake. I used to buy ready made cakes and cupcakes at the store, but in the last few years, I’ve come to love making my children their birthday cakes. I wished I had made my children’s birthday cakes from the very beginning. This year for my toddler, I made luscious bubblegum cupcakes topped with the cutest little frosted elephant sugar cookies.
This is my little man on his first birthday devouring his very first cupcake.
Betty Crocker makes it easy to make your little one’s cake for the big day with some great smash cake recipes. Check out this infographic below to see how easy it is to make a cake shaped like a #1 just from a loaf pan. I would have never thought it was that easy! Here’s how to do it:

I’ve been experimenting with little cakes. I wanted them bigger than cupcakes, so I’ve been playing around with different ways to bake them. I have discovered you can use just about anything to bake a cake, as long as it doesn’t melt in high temperatures.
A couple months ago, I found these amazing little white bowls that were just perfect while I was thrift shopping. Lately, I’ve been using them for everything. Then, a few days ago, I was in a baking mood and decided I would experiment with baking a cake in my new bowls. I was curious how the domed top would come out. I thought that would be a perfect smash cake size.
I used a Betty Crocker Super Moist white cake mix. I also used a cooking spray with flour and really coated the bowls so that the cake wouldn’t get stuck. I had just recently picked up some neon food coloring drops, so I decided to see how a neon green would work with a smash cake. The color came out so bright and just gorgeous! Don’t you just love it!
Unfortunately, I don’t have a finished picture of my pretty little cake. My dear sweet little toddler smashed her hand in the completely frosted version while I was grabbing the camera. It came out just lovely with frosted lavender rosettes. I tinted some vanilla buttercream frosting with just a bit of the neon purple food coloring so it came out this gorgeous lavender color. I thought it was a perfect shade to complement the green cake.
To make those large rosettes, I used this tutorial. It was super easy! I covered the cake in a crumb coat of frosting. Then, I used a large star tip and made rosettes all over with one big rosette on the very top. It had a very rustic shabby chic look to it. Perfect for a baby girl.
You can get idea from this pre-frosted picture of how the dome of the cake came out. After it cooled, I cutoff the flat part that was from the top of the bowl to even it up, then I sliced it into two pieces so I could add frosting to the middle. I really liked the size. It was perfect for baby’s smash cake. It was bigger than a cupcake, and it was big enough you could really decorate it and have fun.
I hope you have as much fun creating your baby’s smash cake with Betty Crocker’s ideas as I did. Enjoy!

Love it!! So pretty. And I really love Betty Crocker. My toddler has nut allergies, but most Betty Crocker mixes and icings are safe for him, so we have many Betty Crocker birthday cakes!
Oh this makes me super excited for my little guy’s first birthday. Thanks for the ideas!

I didn’t know they made neon food coloring! I want some!!! Thanks for sharing!
That is a great idea for my 2 year old! Not because it’s a smash cake, but because he’s allergic to dairy and eggs. When we have cake and such, he can never have some. I never thought to make him tiny portions in little bowls like that!! Thanks so much for the idea!
