I have a senior in high school, so we have spent the last few months touring colleges and checking out door rooms. Surprisingly, little has changed when it comes to dorm rooms since I went to college many years ago. Amazon Prime Student is definitely a great way to get what you need for your new dorm for a stress-free back to school time!
Smart storage is the key to make a small space like that work for you. Here are our top 10 Dorm Room Necessities:
Table of Contents
#1 AmazonBasics Bed in a Bag
This bed-in-a-bag set comes with sheets, comforter and pillowcase and pillow sham for that hard-to-find Twin XL size in dorm rooms. They have a lot of cute prints in this one!
#2 AmazonBasics 6-piece Cotton Towel Set
This is an awesome price from AmazonBasics for a set of 6 towels.
#3 Extra Plush Mattress Pad
The mattresses in dorm rooms are not the most plush, but adding an egg crate or a plush mattress topper makes all the difference in the world.
#4 Bedside Storage
Due to the layout of your dorm, you might not be able to reach the desk, and bedside storage makes things so easy to storm your phone, a couple books, maybe a candy bar.
#5 Deluxe Popup Laundry Hamper
You definitely want a laundry hamper that you can easily carry down to wash your clothes that holds the laundry soap, and it’s collapsible!
#6 Bed Risers
This is how you get magical storage in a door room. You’ll be amazed at how much stuff you can store under the bed in a dorm room.
#7 Collapsible Storage Boxes
Under the bed storage is a must in dorm rooms. These are collapsible, which are even better for space saving.
#8 Self Sticking Hooks
Hooks are great for storage, or hanging those twinkling lights, and you definitely want some that are easy to remove.
#9 Multi-Tiered Hangers
Dorm closets are tiny. Sometimes you even have to share, so making use of space with tiered hangers is a great way to go.
#10 Dimmable Desk Lamp
One of the best things you can do is respect your roommate. Using a desk lamp that you can dim when someone else in the room needs to sleep or rest is all about being a great roommate.

The mattress pad is ABSOLUTELY a must. Dorm room beds are pretty much concrete slabs covered with sheets.
These are great dorm essentials and many of them help provide extra space. This is very important when you are tight on space but have a lot of stuff.
My little sister leaves for college tomorrow and I am so excited for her. She is very nervous and resistant to going off to school, so I will definitely be there to help her with necessities like this–especially the 4 M hooks!
I am not in college or a dorm room, but I still want all of these items for myself. lol.
Collapsible storage box is really a necessity! I love your tips.
You definitely have a few things on here that I wouldn’t have thought of!
This is a great list. I don’t have anyone headed that way but I love some of the stuff. My fave is the bedside storage
I can see how all of these would be very useful for college students. I love the bed n a bag and am going to pick one our for the kids.
These are such great options. No college students yet but, that time will come soon enough. Thanks!
My daughter just left for college earlier this week. I know that she packed 2 large suitcases, backpack, and a bag. I don’t know how she did it without missing anything. I love the bedside storage.
We have been getting all of these supplies for my Daughter. I like the bed risers. I will have to pick some up.
Great list! My daughter uses most of these in her dorm room right now! 🙂 I didn’t get her a mattress pad this year, because last year she had a better bed and didn’t need a thick pad. Not this year though. I need to get her one and give it to her when she comes home for Labor Day.
That is such a great list! All of these are certainly great. I honestly never knew there was an Amazon Prime Student. That’s great!
I am obsessed with bed in a bags. I might be addicted. I really need some drawer organizers they are a mess.
