Our house was built new, but it’s now nine years old, and we’ve been slowing doing upgrades. One upgrade we’ve been working on is painting the walls and trim around the house. We’ve been adding a pop of color here and there, and we love how it’s coming out.
This low wall separates our living room from the kitchen, and the trim frequently gets bumped by kitchen table chairs. After painting the wall, we knew we had to upgrade the trim as well.
Here are my five easy tips to painting trim easily and efficiently to look awesome.
#1 Before painting, clean the trim with a wet cloth to remove any dust and grime. I have a 6 year old that likes to put her cereal bowl on this ledge quite often, so I had to clean up a few bits of dried on cereal from the morning before painting.
#2 Use a mini roller on as much of the trim as you can to get a consistent texture and smooth uniform look. It makes the job go so much faster.
#3 When using a paint brush, apply the paint with short horizontal brush strokes. Then, go back without adding any more paint and do one long paint stroke.
#4 I always use FrogTape® brand painter’s tape. I trust it to prevent any leaking paint so we have great clean lines every single time! I love that they have both multi-surface and delicate surface. Since we had just painted the wall, we chose the delicate surface tape for the trim.
I trust FrogTape® because it is is the only painting tape treated with patented PaintBlock® Technology which reacts with the water in latex paint and instantly gels to form a barrier against paint bleed giving you the sharpest paint lines possible.
#5 Wait 24 hours before pulling off the paint. When you pull it off, do so in about a 45-degree angle so it comes off easily for those smooth clean lines.
I just love how clean and updated the new trim looks! Now I’m ready to paint something else in the house!

Great tips! I just painted s much in my house (and I still have a lot to do) over the last 10-11 months I’ve owned it, and getting it right can be super frustrating. Tape is a MUST. My mom tried not taping and now I have little splotches that I have to fix haha. I also need to do more trip still in the basement, but I am just so tired of painting at the moment that it’ll have to wait. lol
I love Frog Tape!! Trim is the worst to paint and to paint along side, love these tips for painting!
Your room came out so great! I really love the colors, and you did a great job on the lines. Good painters tape is invaluable.
That frog tape is the bomb!
We are currently re-painting out house and that is the only stuff we will use that doesn’t wreck the walls or smudge the paint. I should have read this before I started…my painting isn’t nearly as pretty! Ha ha!
Trim is a bit hard to paint and getting it right can be frustrating. We are moving into a new house next month and next week, we’ll start repainting. I love your tips.
Great tips! I have a few places where the trim needs painted. So these are very useful right now.
I’m sharing this post with my good friend. They just bought a house and they are busy with repainting, tiling, sanding and polishing. This would really come in handy. Thanks for sharing!
FrogTape is amazing for painting. I have to pick some up so i can paint the trim in my house.
We’re going to start painting our house pretty soon so these tips will come in handy. I’ll have to be sure to get some Frog Tape
I want to paint our house soon. It’s just a ton of work. I have not decided what color I want to use. I will be picking up frog tape next go around. I know to leave the tape down longer now. I think that is where I went wrong last time I painted an accent wall.
Frog Tape definitely makes painting trim a lot easier job since you don’t have to focus on neatness as much. I tend to be a messy painter so I usually use a few strips of tape to make the masked off area wider.
Great tips! We have plans of painting our trim so this was super helpful! Love the colors you picked!
I have been thinking about remodeling my living room and repainting everything. Your tips will really help me out.
Thank you so much for this tip. We planning on repainting soon, this will definitely help makes things a little easier with a toddler.
