Serpent’s Kiss by Melissa de la Cruz
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This is the second book in the series of the Witches of East End. While I loved the first one, this one had a hard time keeping my attention until about the middle of the book. I think it was mainly rehashing the entire first book. Who wants to read the first book in the first half of the second book? I don’t care for books in a series when the author decides to explain who everyone is AGAIN in each book. Give the readers some credit. Once this book got over that, it did get somewhat better. I love magical books with time travel, and there is definitely all of that in this one.
This time Freya is trying to determine if her love, Killian, is really the mastermind behind setting up her twin brother and destroying the Bofrir bridge with his trident. Ingrid, her sister, is finally on the path of love with the detective. And, their mother is juggling her former husband and a new flame.
It seemed as if the twists were kind of written on the wall though. I felt the first book had a big twist you didn’t see coming. This one wasn’t that way. Freya’s twin, Freddie, just seems like a complete gullible idiot. He falls in love with this girl he meets on the internet — remember, this guy is the god of the freaking SUN — but he can only fall in love with someone he meets online? Ok…Then, her father makes him do this impossible task in order to get his daughter. Plus, he has to sign the agreement IN BLOOD. Does that wake him up? WTF? The guy is on the run, hiding out, because he fled Limbo. Does his sister wake up and realize he’s walking into a trap? Nope. Does his family? Nope. It’s all just set up too easy.
The only interesting part is the mother Joanna and the dead witch that contacted her. Now they are going back in time to stop the Salem witch trials. It seems the god of mischief, Loki, is the cause of everyone’s problem. They suspect he’s the one who destroyed the bridge and his minions set up Freddie, AND now he’s the one who was really behind the Salem witch trials. Someone needs to hurry up and beat the tar out of Loki.
I’m picking up book #3 – The Winds of Salem, tomorrow. I’m hoping we don’t have to rehash every single character again in that one.
