This year I’ve decided to do a Voodoo theme for our Halloween decorations. Today, we’re starting with this totally fun and easy Voodoo Skeleton Queen for your front door.
She’s got some tiny skulls, a crow, and a spider to fancy up her hair because even the undead need to feel pretty. Her hair is a bit stringy. it’s actually a Halloween bush pick for a wreath that I split in two because skeleton’s don’t have the greatest hair, along with some raffia mixed into it.
I’m currently a little obsessed with skeleton crowns, so I just LOVE how this crown came out. Stay tuned for a real live version to wear on your own head!
For this DIY, I found all my supplies at Michaels, including these awesome battery-powered lights. They are teeny tiny skulls! And, they have these cool settings. You can choose flashing, on all the time, or fade. I like the fade the best. So let’s get started!
Table of Contents
Supplies
- Large flat wooden skull cutout
- raffia
- stringy halloween bush pick
- 4 skeleton hands
- 2-4 small skulls
- black crow
- small plastic or rubber spider
- optional: battery powered lights
- hot glue gun
Directions
I found a pack of small skeleton hands. It comes with about 10 of them, but you only need 4. Take 3 of them and hot glue them together into the shape of a crown. Then hot glue the crown to the back of the top of the wooden skull. If you skull has a piece of rope or twine to hang it, make sure you keep that behind the crown when you glue it. I did not and had to redo mine.
I found just one Halloween floral bush pick that I thought worked well for the hair. Divide the branches in half so that it looks like hair. Bend the stem so that you can hot glue it to the center of the back of the skull and then pull the hair over the either side of the skull. It magically looks like hair!
Take some raffia and tie it to one side of the top of the “hair” in a knot. Take a small section of raffia and tie it to the hair on the other side.
Wrap a piece of raffia around the back of each of the small skulls and tie a knot. Add a dab of hot glue to the top and bottom of the raffia tied around each skull. Do the same with the last skeleton hand.
The black crow should have some wires coming out the back of it’s feet. Wrap those wires into the bigger knot of raffia. Then, add a dab of hot glue to the bottom of each food to keep it secure. Add a spider near one side of the crown. Dab some hot glue to keep it in place.
Add the batteries to the lights and then wrap the excess cord around the rope or twine for hanging the skull. If yours does not have something to hang it, make sure to add it, and then wrap the battery cord around it. Then, just weave the lights into the hair and raffia.
Now you’re done with your Voodoo Skeleton Queen! Hang it outside for a spooky fright!
