Did you know the largest organ in your body is your skin?  Everyday, we slip into all kinds of fabric from clothes to towels to finally our sheets. Did you know that nearly half of U.S. adults report having sensitive skin? Most people recognize the need for face and body products for sensitive skin, but they don’t always think about the importance of what laundry products they use on the fabrics that touch their skin all day.

Even if you have sensitive skin like me, it’s sometimes easy to forget that fabric can sometimes cause skin irritants until you realize something was not washed in “free” laundry products.  According to P&G, 87% of people who use laundry soap free of perfumes and dyes still use scented fabric softener/dryer sheets, which can cause irritation.  This is a battle I’ve had with my own mother-in-law, who has never had sensitive skin or allergies in her life.

This is why it’s so important to pay attention to what is irritating your skin.  My family have severe allergies, and it isn’t just typical hay fever.  The dyes and scents in laundry products can get all of us with skin irritants and rashes as well as headaches, coughing, and sneezing.  This means I have to be very careful about what I use to wash our “Second Skin” — clothing, towels, and bedding.

If you do have sensitive skin, it is so important to follow a completely dye and perfume free laundry regimen – from detergent to fabric softener to dryer sheets.  This way your skin can look and feel its best, and you have clean and protected clothing. The P&G Free & Gentle laundry routine is made up of dye and perfume free products that offer sensitive skin sufferers a hypoallergenic routine that is gentle on skin.  Free & Gentle products are dermatologist recommended.

I always used “free” products that are without dyes and perfumes.  Lately, I’ve switched to using only trusted P&G Free & Gentle products.  I’ve used Tide Free and Bounce Free for years, but until just recently I had no idea there was a Downy Free.  I have to admit I’ve always wanted to use fabric softener, but until I found one free of perfume and dye, it just made me and Nate too itchy to use, which kind of defeats the purpose of fabric softener. 😉 Now that I’m using all three, our clothes are coming out so nice, clean, and soft.

This Free & Gentle collection has become my favorite.  Not only does it leave our clothes clean and soft, it also doesn’t bother any of our skin or make us cough or sneeze.  Here’s what I’ve been using:

Tide Free & Gentle Detergent / Tide Stain Release Free In-Wash Booster  – It’s the leading free detergent that’s mild on skin, cleans better, and removes more residue from stains.

Downy Free & Gentle Fabric Softener  – It’s mild on skin and provides comfort and freshness through its softening formula.

Bounce Free & Gentle Dryer Sheet – No overpowering scent!  It mild on skin and provides static control, softness, and it even repels pet hair.

If someone in your family has unexplained itching or rashes with their clothing, they just might have sensitive skin.  You might consider trying P&G Free & Gentle products to see if it helps stop those issues.  Long ago I realized I couldn’t switch up detergents or my skin would flare up every single time, and this is why I’ve stuck with P&G Free & Gentle.
