With Google being very important with SEO, I’m always surprised when I see other bloggers say they don’t utilize Google+ (Google Plus). It’s such a great resource to engage in social media, especially when Facebook is so fickle with your organic reach.
Google+ is much easier to share your blog post and engage users. In the last month, I’ve increased my Google+ following by more than 50% by using a few tips. Below, I’ve put together five ways to improve Google+ engagement. Hopefully, they can help you, too!
1. Add your own picture to Google+ Posts.
This is one of the most important tips!! Use a large clear picture along with your post. Don’t use the image that Google automatically brings up from your link. You want something that catches someone’s eye — a cupcake they can’t wait to eat or a great picture of a product they can’t wait to try.
2. Use Rich Text on your Google+ post.
This will make key phrases and words POP in your post, such as the name of your recipe or the name of a product for a review.
To use Bold text, use astericks around the words. *bold* – Using astericks around words will make them appear bold.
To use Italic text, use underscores around the words. _underscore_ – Using underscores around words will make them appear italicized.
To use a strikethrough, use dashes around the words. -strikethrough- –
Using dashes around words will make them look like a strikethrough.
3. Join communities.
There are TONS of communities for all kinds of interests. Simply click on the side menu and choose “communities.” Based on what you post on Google+, Google will figure out your interests and under “Discover Communities” Google will show you a huge selection of communities to join.
Some of these groups have thousands of members. I’m a member of a foodie group that has more than 20k members. When you share your post with the group, there is potential for all those members to see your post and then follow you.
4. Share publicly and in communities.
Don’t share your posts privately. By doing that, your post only goes to a handful of people you pick and choose. You want as many views for potential 1+’s and shares as possible, so share publicly. This way many of your followers will see your posts. Plus, all those shares and 1+’s increase your SEO.
Also, once you share publicly, share with your communities that fit the interest of your post. When I have a recipe, I share it publicly and with 4-5 communities. Within 24 hours, I have multiple shares and 1+s and usually an increase in 10-20 followers.
5. Share, share, share!
Share your content regularly. You can even share some of your older blog posts in new Google+ posts. Add a G+ share button to your blog or browser to easily share. Also, share other people’s content. People can see when you share their content and frequently will follow you when they’ve seen you’ve shared their content.
Try some of these tips and see if you notice an improvement in your followers, shares, and 1+s. You’ll be surprised!
