This week is Homecoming week for the high school in our little town. Every day is some crazy dress day, and Wednesday’s theme was Wild Wednesday. The kids were to dress like a wild animal. Miss Em decided she was going to be a cheetah. We found this perfect face sticker set and a little cheetah tail and bowtie at the $5 dollar store.
Years ago, we had a book from the library that had crazy hairstyles for girls. One of them we did way back when was these cat ears from pipe cleaners. It’s totally easy to do. You just create two small pigtails at the front of her hair, then braid a pipe cleaner into the hair and bend the braids over to form ears and bobby pin. It’s super cute and takes about 5 minutes tops.
To go with her cheetah plan, my daughter wanted matching shoes. She had a stash of cheetah duct tape and an old pair of Tom’s, so I went to work creating “cheetah” shoes at about 1 AM while watching a spooky episode of Sleepy Hollow. It took me about 1 1/2 hours to do both shoes.
I thought I’d share this in a tutorial because you always need shoes to match your Halloween costume, and this is a perfectly inexpensive way to do it.
How to Duct Tape Toms shoes
Supplies
1 roll of duct tape
old pair of Tom’s
Exacto knife
Scissors
I think it’s easier to just look at the pictures and get an idea on how to do this. Here are a few tips I discovered along the way:
- I found long strips were preferred over short strips.
- Create a pleat at the toe.
- Create darts on the under side of the top of the shoe and the top of the heel. This will allow the shoe to be a little stretchy like it was intended. For the top of the shoe and the heel, I simply sliced open the tape halfway down and then overlapped the edges to get a nice tiny dart.
- Use the Exacto knife to cut off excess at seams and around the edge of the sole. I found a gentle pressure cut nicely through the tape and did not cut the shoe.
- Once I had finished covering an entire shoe, I went around the shoe a couple of times just smoothing everything out.
